The Full Monty cast are back together after 25 years to recreate the world of the hit film for a new TV series.

A Disney+ series, also titled The Full Monty, began filming today in Sheffield and Manchester and will catch up with the original characters 25 years after we last left them.

Robert Carlyle is back as the story's star Gaz alongside Mark Addy as Dave, Lesley Sharp as Jean, Hugo Speer as Guy, Paul Barber as Horse, Steve Hulson as Lomper, Wim Snape as Nathan and Tom Wilkinson as Gerald.

The 1997 film followed six unemployed steel workers in Sheffield who formed a male stripper act and the personal struggles they went through.

It’s the oldest film on our list, but ‘The Full Monty’ managed an astounding box office run back in 1997. A comedy-drama which saw a group of former steelworkers from Sheffield become a Chippendales-like stripping act, ‘The Full Monty’ tapped into British sensibilities as it tackled some serious issues with a whimsical edge. And it earned a staggering £52.1 million at the box office – hugely impressive even by today’s standards.

In the new eight-part TV series, a new cast of children and grandchildren will join the original stars to navigate the post-industrial city of Sheffield against the backdrop of society’s crumbling healthcare, education and employment sectors.

The series will pick up the brighter, sillier tone of the film and its message that communal effort can still triumph over adversity.

As well as welcoming back the cast, the film's screenwriter Simon Beaufoy (Slumdog Millionaire) and producer Uberto Pasolini will also be back for the TV series.

Beaufoy said: “We’re chuffed to bits to get all the Monty Men back together again – now with a chaotic entourage of children, grandchildren, pets and assorted hangers-on – to see what life in Sheffield is like 25 years on.”

Lee Mason, director of scripted content EMEA, Disney added: “Twenty-five years ago Simon introduced us to a group of funny, fearless and resilient unemployed working-class men from Sheffield and the world fell in love with them.

"We’re delighted to reunite the original cast for this brand-new series on Disney+ to catch up with these iconic characters and what they’ve been up to since we last saw them on stage in all their glory, and we can’t wait to introduce a host of exciting new faces and characters.”
