The plot thickens when no body is found, though, and some other witnesses even claim to have seen Percy driving away from the scene.

Her mother, who appears to be hiding secrets, is completely convinced that Percy would not take her own life and Harry soon finds himself drawn back into the world of investigative policing as he looks at the creepy missing person case.

What has happened in The Sinner so far?

Harry has worked on some unsettling cases. (Peter Kramer/USA Network)

Series one of The Sinner was possibly the creepiest so far, opening with a shocking scene as Biel's young mum character Cora was apparently triggered by a song playing at a sunny day out by the lake into the brutal murder of a man in front of scores of witnesses.

Harry developed a bond with the murderer and helped her to uncover a long-buried traumatic experience at a party which had gone on to affect her adult life.

By series two, Harry was investigating the unsettling case of a young boy who appeared to have murdered his parents in their motel room on a family holiday, but discovered a cult was behind the crimes, and the reason the boy was on the trip in the first place.

In series three, Harry was looking into a car crash that had one survivor, Jamie, who turned out to be responsible for his friend's death in the accident by delaying calling an ambulance.

Jamie was kicked out by his wife who had just given birth and went on a crime rampage, which included trying to kill artist Sonya who lived near the crash site, burying Harry alive, killing Harry's boss, kidnapping Harry's grandson, and eventually being killed himself by Harry.

The detective began dating Sonya in series three, who reappears with him in series four, and has had a troubled relationship with his adult daughter throughout each series - made no easier by the kidnap of his grandson.

The Sinner is streaming now on Netflix.
