This Morning's Alison Hammond criticised by Alastair Campbell for joke political manifesto

Alison Hammond was confronted by Alastair Campbell on This Morning after making a joke political speech.

The former New Labour spin-doctor and Good Morning Britain presenter was a guest on the daytime show to discuss his Channel 4 reality show Make Me Prime Minister, and Hammond delivered a spoof manifesto promising to abolish bills and taxes and give everyone a hug.

Campbell, 65, failed to see the funny side, accusing Hammond of being "part of the populist nonsense that is bringing the country down."

In her joke speech, Hammond said: "My first point would have to be times are tough, no bills whatsoever. Don't worry about a thing, I am going to recoup it in other ways – mainly from men who wear sandals with socks.

She added: "There also might be a bit of a prison sentence if you wear things like that."

The camera showed Campbell with pursed lips, turning his head as presenters Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby chuckled.

Hammond also promised: "Everyone who lives in Britain will own their own piece of land - yes, you out there, will have your own piece of land. Anyone who has their own piece of land already will keep that, however, if it is a little bit too big we are going to be sharing."

The 47-year-old former Big Brother contestant, famous for her raucous laugh, also declared if she was prime minister there would be a National Laughing Day.

She said: "We all know laughing heals. Laughing saves lives. You will go online, watch comedy, go to the theatres and watch comedy. It will all be about laughter - because laughter is key."

Hammond also promised to abolish traffic wardens, speed cameras, parking tickets and all vehicle fines, saying, "Don't worry, I will recoup it in another way."

She vowed to allow everyone to take a Duvet Day, whenever they wanted adding: "Bosses will have to listen to their staff and just allow them. If you are feeling tired, or you don't want to go to work, they will just have to deal with it."

Hammond also advised prospective voters to "hug thy neighbour" and told fans: "If you see me out in the street and want a hug from the Hammond, just come on over and hug away."

After her speech Campbell told her, "I'm not happy."

The former political press secretary to Tony Blair was appearing on the show with Conservative party member Baroness Sayeeda Warsi.

They are both judges on Make Me Prime Minister, a reality show in which contestants compete in challenges to be named Channel 4's alternative prime minister.
