Tom Holland has broken his silence on the controversy surrounding Spider-Man's future in Marvel films.

The web-slinger has been part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe since 2016 following a landmark deal between Sony, which owns the film rights for the character, and Marvel's parent company Disney.

However, the two entertainment giants failed to come to a new agreement over future films, all but ending Spider-Man's involvement in the MCU.

Holland appeared on stage at Disney's convention D23 on Saturday and spoke publicly for the first time about the situation.

He said: "It's been a crazy week. But I want you to know I am grateful from the bottom of my heart and I love you 3,000."

The latter part of the statement is a reference to a phrase in the Avengers films.

Holland, 23, first played Spider-Man in 2016's Captain America: Civil War. He was appearing at D23 promoting the Disney/Pixar animated film Onward, which also stars Jurassic World's Chris Pratt.

The movie sees Holland and Pratt as two teenage elf brothers who embark on a quest to discover if there is still magic in the world.

Yesterday, Holland's father addressed Sony's split with Disney over the franchise.

Comedian Dominic Holland, 52, said he believes “the show will continue” as the movies are successful.

Writing on his blog, Holland said: “I know nothing about the impasse between Sony and Marvel. I have no inside track on such issues. But whatever is decided by the big suits at these big Hollywood studios – my hunch is that the show will continue.

“Too much at stake and too many dollars riding on it – and besides, everyone wants the same thing; namely, Spider-Man on large screens keeping people safe and entertained.”

His comments came after Sony released a statement over the failed negotiations to continue the Spider-Man franchise with Marvel Studios’ involvement.

The entertainment giant has owned the film rights for the beloved superhero since 1999 and struck a landmark deal with Disney in 2015 allowing the character to appear in the MCU.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige had taken a key creative role in the last two Spider-Man films and successfully integrated the web slinger into its multi-billion dollar Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Sony Pictures then stated it "respects" Disney's decision not to allow Feige to take such a big role in a franchise it does not own, and hinted a deal could be done further down the line.
