Amazon Prime has announced that we'll be getting a fifth season of Transparent.

The news arrives before season four of the Emmy, Golden Globe and BAFTA-winning comedy-drama launches on September 22.

The fifth run will apparently see all the core Pfefferman actors returning – Jeffrey Tambor, Judith Light, Gaby Hoffmann, Jay Duplass and Amy Landecker – for an expected debut in 2018.

"We are extremely grateful to Amazon Studios for their continued trust and support and to our audience for their warm embrace of the Pfeffermans," Joe Lewis, Head of Comedy, Drama and VR at Amazon Studios said in a statement.

"We look forward to another season of comedy and drama, love and weirdness, God and sex – in the service of community and in pursuit of peace, joy, freedom and human rights for all."

This is the third time that Transparent has been renewed with an existing season still left to air, with the fourth run having being announced in May 2016 before we'd seen the third.

The creators and cast of Transparent made a public statement in response to US president Donald Trump's transgender military ban last month, writing: "To our trans community members serving in the military and to transgender veterans: We work in solidarity with you and will continue fighting and creating art for our community's well-being and future.

"We hope that you'll enjoy the trailer for season 4 because our visibility and our stories are more important than ever."

Transparent returns to Amazon Prime on September 22.
