Twin sisters who launched a 'disgraceful' attack on a group of women after one barged them on a night out have avoided jail.

Sophie and Katie Wood left their victims with injuries all over their bodies, and one is so shaken she is anxious to go out on her own.

The twins, then 21, were out in Manchester city centre at around 2am when Sophie bumped into one of the women, who replied: “Watch what you are doing.”

This spurred a “disgraceful” attack which saw Sophie, from the suburb of Openshaw, pushing and punching the woman, kicking her head and pulling her hair.

Sophie was helped by her sister, who at one stage took off her high-heeled shoe and repeatedly hit one of the victims on the head.

When police later tracked the pair down in a car and arrested them, they found the shoe in the footwell with strands of hair and blood on the straps.

At one point, Katie Wood took off her high-heeled shoe and repeatedly hit one of the victims on the head.

The group women had spent part of their evening on 2 February 2020 at the History Nightclub before leaving at around 2am and walking towards Deansgate to get a taxi home.

It was then that Sophie Wood “barged into one of the women”, prosecutor Paul Dockery told the court.

“It may have been by accident. The woman reacted by saying words to the effect of ‘watch what you are doing’ and that spurred Sophie Wood to react,” he added.

“She began pushing the girl then punching her and she was helped by her sister. A member of the public filmed the incident on his phone.”

During the brawl, Sophie dragged one woman off the floor by her hair and pummelled her in the face multiple times, the court heard.

One of the women told Katie “You hit my friends for no reason”, to which she responded by punching and kicking her.

Both Sophie and Katie Wood, now 24, who had no previous convictions, pleaded guilty to charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and affray.

Mitigating for Sophie, Estelle Parkhouse said her client had drank alcohol before leaving for the night out, and later bought a bottle of vodka from which both sisters poured ‘freely’ throughout the evening.

“This is not how young ladies on a night out should conduct themselves. She is well aware of that and is mortified, Ms Parkhouse said.

Handing them both suspended sentences, the judge Recorder Searle said: “This was disgraceful behaviour by both of you. To your credit, I accept that you are thoroughly ashamed by what happened that night.

“You have no previous convictions, you have kept out of trouble since the offences and this was wholly out of character. I don’t think this will happen again. Don’t let me down.”

Katie and Sophie Wood, both of Openshaw, Manchester were sentenced to six months imprisonment, suspended for 12 months.

They were also ordered to complete 120 hours unpaid work each as well as five days of rehabilitation activity requirements.
