Yahoo News Unforgotten's Peter Egan shares heartbreaking news his wife Myra has died
Unforgotten star Peter Egan has shared the heartbreaking news that Myra Frances, his wife of 49 years, has passed away.
The 74-year-old actor, who plays Nicola Walker's on-screen father Martin Hughes in the popular ITV crime drama, took to social media on Thursday (April 1) to share a post confirming the sad news.
"This is the saddest post I will ever have to make. My wonderful wife Myra, my friend & soulmate lost her battle with cancer at 1.30am on Tuesday," he wrote. "This message is for all her followers on her FB & Twitter @EganMyra. She was the most amazing human being. My heart is broken."
Peter, who has also appeared in titles such as Chariots of Fire, After Life and Downton Abbey, met Myra back in 1972, while they were both working on ITV's The Organization. During her acting career, Myra also starred in '70s TV drama Survivors and appeared as Lady Adrasta in 1979 Doctor Who serial 'The Creature from the Pit'.
In 1974, Myra and her Second City Firsts co-star Alison Steadman made history by performing the first lesbian kiss on British television.
Peter and Myra married four years after they met and have one daughter together, Rebecca, who is also an actor and has had roles in EastEnders, Holby City, Midsomer Murders, Doctors, The Bill and Casualty.
In a video he shared alongside his post, Peter told his followers that Myra's illness was the reason he hadn't been very active online recently and he added that his social media break would continue.
"I've been absent from social media quite a lot recently and people are asking why, and indeed so is my wonderful wife of 49 years Myra, who like me has been a very active campaigner for a long time for all of the animals of the world that we care about," Peter began.
"I'm finding it very difficult to say that my wonderful wife died of cancer in the early hours of Tuesday morning."

He continued: "I am absolutely devastated and it's very hard to think straight at the moment but I wanted to share this message with all of her followers and all of my followers, just to say that I'll be taking a break from social media for a little while as I get myself together, and while I arrange things for my wonderful wife Myra.
"She was the most amazing woman I've ever met. I miss her desperately," he added.
"I will, because Myra would have wanted it, I will carry on my campaigning, because she was the person that taught me to be human, to be compassionate, to be kind and to be empathetic. Goodbye for now, and please, everyone, be kind."
