Victoria Beckham says reunited trio GEM shouldn’t sing Spice Girls songs

Former Spice Girls member Victoria Beckham (aka Posh Spice) doesn’t want the Spice Girls to sing Spice Girls songs at the Spice Girls reunion… we will give you a minute to let that sink in.

That’s right – Victoria, 42, is attempting to have her cake and eat it too, after famously declining to participate in the forthcoming Spice Girls reunion, she is now suggesting that reunited trio GEM should sing their own material.

The fashion designer believes that the reformed girl group – featuring Mel B, Emma Bunton and Geri Horner (née Halliwell) – should perform as a new group, rather than relying on the Spice Girls’ back catalogue.

Speaking in an interview with Sunday Times Style, Victoria expressed her concerns and admitted that it would make her feel “sad” to hear GEM take on their old classics.

When asked if she wished the three girls luck in their new endeavour, she responded: “Of course, as a new group, I do.

“I do think they should sing their own material though, because what we did in the Spice Girls was so special. If they sang Spice Girls songs I think I might be a bit sad.”

These comments come after Victoria refused to take part in the Spice Girls reunion to celebrate the anniversary of the band’s debut single and album, as she would rather focus on building her fashion empire.

“I think I learnt a lot from the Spice Girls, most importantly how you can have everything one minute and then lose it the next,” she explained. “I’ve been given a second chance, so I’m not going to lose it again.”

Mel C (aka Sporty Spice) also refused to participate in the reunion, explaining that “something didn’t feel quite right”, and instead opted to release a solo album of her own.

“The hardest part for me was letting people down, the girls, the fans, civilization?! Unfortunately something didn’t feel quite right and I had to follow my gut,” she told LOVE magazine.

Mel, 42, who was originally against the 2007 reunion, revealed that she was happy with the group’s performance at the 2012 Olympic Games: “I loved what we did as the Spice Girls and part of me will be Sporty Spice until I die.

“We had one reunion [in 2007] and I didn’t want to do that,” she told the Mail on Sunday. “But I was talked round and it was the right thing to do, we had a great time and then we played at the closing ceremony for the Olympics in 2012.

“That to me was where [the Spice Girls] should have been laid to rest. Sometimes you just have to say no.”
