A VIOLENT sex attacker tried to dodge justice by claiming he was terrified of the victim.

Roy Clark left the woman traumatised during a harrowing 16-year ordeal.

The former roofing firm boss - who confessed to being a "womaniser" - denied the crimes during a trial at the High Court in Glasgow.

His lawyer Sarah Livingstone put to him in evidence: "I got the impression when living with her that she was scared of you."

Clark responded: "No, not at all. I was the one frightened of her."

Ms Livingstone said: "Her evidence was that you were controlling, you were the one in charge manipulating her."

The 41-year-old replied: "No, not at all."

Clark, of Rutherglen, was today found guilty of seven charges including rape as well as sexual, indecent and physical assault.

The offences occurred in Shettleston and Easterhouse in Glasgow as well as Rutherglen near the city between 2002 and 2018.

Clark - who had been on bail - looked on the verge of tears as he was remanded in custody by judge Lord Beckett.

He will be sentenced next month.

Jurors heard of what was described as a "catalogue of rapes" which included when the woman was initially asleep.

One violent incident occurred after a row about tickets for an Ed Sheeran gig.

In his closing speech, prosecutor Euan Cameron said texts between Clark and the woman helped point to his guilt.

This included her stating to him: "It is always what you want. You push it too far."

Clark remarked at one stage what happened was "not nice" and that he "hated" himself.

Clark insisted the woman was not telling the truth and that the only time he was physically violent to her was biting the victim to get her off him.

He also denied any drunken rages or outbursts.

Defence advocate Ms Livingstone said: "Did you ever have sex with her against her will?"

Clark responded: "No."

He was cleared of assaulting and threatening another woman after jurors returned not proven verdicts.

Sentencing was deferred for reports.
