One of the biggest deviations in The Walking Dead from the original comics is the character Andrea.

Played by Laurie Holden, Andrea was shockingly killed off in the season three finale after spending the season in Woodbury, the town run by the Governor (David Morrissey).

She survives considerably longer in the comics – in fact, she should still be alive for this season's All Out War.

Andrea actually never found herself separated from Rick's group in the comics, and that whole romance storyline with the Governor was all in the TV show only. And Holden described the direction the TV show took as "complete and utter nonsense".

"I think the departure from book Andrea to the screen was a mistake," she said, speaking at a fan convention. "I mean, it's not like I couldn't pull it off.

"I think the whole stuff that they wrote about Andrea and the Governor was complete and utter nonsense. I did the best that I could to tell that narrative and to justify it where Andrea kept her heart."

The third season was run by Glen Mazzara.

Andrea had a different and less favoured death scene, and when Scott Gimple came in and took over, one of the things he did was to tweak that moment and give Andrea a different death.

"I love Scott Gimple for giving me a gorgeous death with redemption so that you understood, and she wasn't a victim – she died on her own terms," she said.

"But I think that there was so much beautiful narrative that was lost, and that she should have been there for a long time and been the leader that [Robert] Kirkman created in the comic book."

Holden previously claimed that she was told she would be on the show for at least eight seasons before plans unexpectedly changed.

The Walking Dead launches its eighth season on October 22 on AMC in the US. It will air on FOX in the UK.
