Weinstein Company's first movie since scandal flops in US

The Weinstein Company’s first movie release since Harvey Weinstein was accused of sexual assault by multiple actresses has flopped.

According to Variety, Amityville: The Awakening grossed just $742 (£564) from 10 sites across the US. The haunted house sequel has also been made available to stream on Google Play.

Starring Bella Thorne, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Jennifer Morrison, and Cameron Monaghan, the Franck Khalfoun written and directed movie was produced by The Weinstein Company along with Blumhouse.

The Awakening serves as a direct sequel to The Amityville Horror — the 1979 horror that managed to make $86.4 million — ignoring the subsequent 16 sequels that were previously released.

The Weinstein Company scrubbed multiple release dates for the movie, eventually landing a Google Play release, which started on the 12 October and finishes 8 November.

The limited theatrical release was intended to take advantage of the Halloween weekend, the eighth Saw movie — Jigsaw — also reaching cinemas over the weekend.

Despite mixed reviews, Jigsaw managed to take $16.3 million in the US, making an additional $9.5 million from around the world.

Meanwhile, Suburbicon — the George Clooney-directed, Matt Damon-starring, Coen Brothers-written movie — only took $2.8 million, coming off a $25 million budget.
