'Who Do You Think You Are?' new series features Richard Osman, Sue Perkins and Matt Lucas

Richard Osman, Sue Perkins and Matt Lucas are among the celebrities set to discover hidden family secrets in the new series of Who Do You Think You Are?.

The hit BBC One genealogy show is set to return for another run, which will also feature Line Of Duty and Motherland star Anna Maxwell Martin, and Death In Paradise's Ralf Little.

BBC One is trailing "stories of bravery, loss, heartbreak, sacrifice, resilience and joy filtering down through the generations" for the new series, which is due to begin on Thursday, 26 May with a week's break for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

The series will see murder mystery author Osman discover a grisly crime in his own family as he finds out that one of his ancestors became entangled in a notorious murder trial.

TV presenter and comedian Perkins will discover more about her orphaned grandfather and a great grandfather interned as an ‘enemy alien’ during the First World War in the opening episode.

Comedian and Great British Bake Off host Lucas finds out more about his Jewish grandmother who came to the UK from Germany in 1939 and the harrowing Holocaust tales involved in her story.

Little is thrilled to discover a footballing legacy, while Maxwell Martin is told about an emotional story of separation in her grandfather's life.

The celebrities' searches will take them far and wide, with the series travelling to Brighton, Berlin, Manchester, Amsterdam, Scotland and Lithuania.

Carl Callam, BBC commissioning editor for documentaries, said: "It’s great to see some of our most loved celebrities trace their family history through these remarkable journeys, and their compelling stories.

One of the most famous Who Do You Think You Are? episodes saw EastEnders actor Danny Dyer discover that he was a direct descendent of King Edward III and also uncovered that Thomas Cromwell was a part of his family tree.

Who Do You Think You Are? returns with Sue Perkins on Thursday, 26 May at 9pm on BBC One.
