The Pop Idol winner’s revelation comes amid fear over the spread of a new mutant strain of the virus.

The new variant, which is said to be 70% more infectious than previous strains, has already spread around the UK, with cases identified in Wales and Scotland.

Young isn't the only star to recently share they had tested positive – Great British Bake Off finalist Laura Adlington and Peaky Blinders actor Sophie Rundle have also said they have caught it.

Adlington said on her Instagram Stories that it was a "ball ache" to get it right before Christmas, while Rundle also shared her news to the social media platform on Tuesday as she posted photos of herself in bed.

Meanwhile, singer Jess Glynne has disclosed that she lost her grandmother to coronavirus, describing it as a "horrific" time.

Explaining how it made her especially careful when it comes to COVID, she told The Mirror: “I’m really cautious in my movements because it is mad serious.
