Police launch probe after woman in her 70s dies following crash involving an ambulance

Police have launched an investigation after an elderly woman was died after her car was involved in a head-on collision with an ambulance on an emergency call.

The woman, in her 70s, was rushed to King's College Hospital in London after the crash in Chatham, Kent, but later died.

Kent Police has now launched an investigation into the incident, which happened on 23 November.

The force is appealing for any footage - either privately-owned CCTV or dash cam footage - which shows either of the vehicles involved.

At the time of the crash, The Brook in Chatham was cordoned off and a damaged car and ambulance could be seen, as well as debris strewn in the road.

Speaking after the incident, a South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb) spokesman said: "SECAmb can confirm that one of its ambulances was involved in a road traffic collision with a car in The Brook, Chatham shortly after 11.45am.

"The vehicle was en route to a nearby incident at the time of the collision.

"Ambulance crews attended the scene and the two occupants of the car were assessed and treated before being taken to hospital."

The statement confirmed that the woman was taken to King's College Hospital and that a man, who was in a less serious condition had been taken to Medway Maritime Hospital.

The ambulance crew were "shaken but uninjured", the spokesman said.

In an appeal for information on Sunday (5 December), a statement from Kent Police's serious collision investigation department said: "At 11.49am on Tuesday 23 November 2021, Kent Police was called to a collision between a car and an ambulance in The Brook, at the exit road from The Brook multistorey car park.

"A passenger in the car, a woman in her seventies, was taken to a London hospital for treatment. She remained in hospital but later died from her injuries.

"Kent Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Department are investigating the circumstances and would like to hear from anyone who has information and is yet to speak with an officer.

"Investigators are particularly keen to obtain privately held CCTV and dash cam footage which captures any of the parties involved."
