Wynonna Earp spoilers for season 4, episode 2 'Friends in Low Places' follow.

Wynonna Earp season 4 continued with its latest episode on Sunday (August 2), and the series introduced the shock twist that Wynonna, Doc and Waverly had been in the Garden of Eden for a year and a half.

During the episode, titled 'Friends in Low Places', Wynonna (Melanie Scrofano) travelled to the Garden through an interdimensional portal, in the hopes of saving Doc (Tim Rozon) and sister Waverly (Dominique Provost-Chalkley).

Later, the trio were targeted by shapeshifter Eve, who almost tricked the latter by presenting as Waverly's girlfriend Nicole (Kat Barrell).

Eventually, the trio found their way back to Purgatory – albeit in different parts of town – and when the couple actually reunited, Nicole informed Waverly that 18 months had passed since they last saw one another.

Now, creator Emily Andras has opened up about how they decided on the specifics of the twist.

"I think we wanted it to be long enough to realise that the characters will have changed," Andras told TV Line.

"We will be really intrigued by what the ones who have been left behind have been through, what they've had to do to survive, how they coped without their friends. But at the same time, we didn't want it to start feeling like a May-December romance. Like, 40 years probably would have been too much."

"I feel like we wanted to be mean, but like Wynonna Earp-mean," she continued.

"You understand it, but you're not devastated. Anything over a year, I feel like that's when people start to get really weird, if people I loved were gone for over a year.

"There's something about 18 months — you understand that for the people left behind, they would have started to wonder if this was their new reality and they had to make a new go at their lives."

Elsewhere in the interview, Andras teased that of all the people left behind in Purgatory, Nicole has probably changed the most in the time that the rest of the group were gone.

"We still don't know what happened to a couple characters, like Jeremy and Robin," she added. "And we don't know the fate of poor Nedley, who was injured the last time we saw him."

Wynonna Earp airs on SyFy in the US. Seasons 1 and 2 are available to stream on Netflix in the UK.
