Young Sheldon season four is definitely happening. The show was renewed at the same time as season three, which either reflects CBS’ confidence in the concept or the network's need for something to fill the void left by The Big Bang Theory ending earlier this year.

"Thanks to Chuck Lorre’s and [co-creator/showrunner] Steve Molaro’s outstanding creative leadership, Young Sheldon has been a powerful performer for the network with an audience that towers over most of the television landscape,” CBS Entertainment president Kelly Kahl said in a statement.

Added Thom Sherman, senior Exec VP Programming: "The Coopers are portrayed by an amazing cast, and we are looking forward to having the gifted writing staff mine even more of Sheldon’s hilarious backstory and the warm family dynamic that has made this comedy a favorite with audiences for the past two seasons."

CBS are also keen to keep Lorre with the broadcaster, in the wake of some serious streaming competition.

"We will do shows with Chuck as long as Chuck wants to do shows with us," Kahl told THR in January. "I can't speak for him, but I do believe he's had a very good experience with us and I'd like to think it's very possible you can enjoy both experiences and take something away from each. I certainly hope he will be in business with us for many years to come. He is the best in the business and a great partner.”

Now that old Sheldon has hung up his Flash T-shirt, and Lorre’s completely focused on Young Sheldon, what does the future hold for the show? Here’s everything you need to know.

That’s a mystery that’s as easy for us to solve as quantum mechanic conundrums are for the show's lead: it’ll air in late September 2020. The previous three seasons have aired yearly, all in the last week of September. Next question!

The Big Bang Theory spin-off stars Iain Armitage as the titular Sheldon, with the young actor joined by Zoe Perry, Lance Barber, Annie Potts, Montana Jordan, Matt Hobby, Raegan Revord, and Jim Parsons providing voiceover narration.

We’d expect them all to return, especially Iain Armitage; not least because he’s the title star, and his co-stars have nothing but praise for him (via Esquire).

“He is exceptional as a young actor, as a performer. He's one of those kids that was built to do it. In his genetics is show business,” says Lance Barber, who plays Sheldon’s dad, George Cooper Sr. “Intellectually, he must be exceptional, I think, to do the amount that he does and the hours that he does. And you spend time with the kid and he's very bright and very smart and has a maturity that is beyond his years.”

“I’m amazed on a daily basis that he can do what he does,” agrees Zoe Perry, who plays his TV mum, Mary Cooper. “I think back to my being that age, and I was so shy in most settings where it wasn’t just my family."

"His gregariousness and his talent level is frankly astonishing. I think it takes a unique talent to be able to pull off what he pulls off, but his emotional intuitiveness and his ability to center things and understand the scope of what Sheldon might be going through is very advanced.”

Season three changed the opening credits to include Sheldon’s entire family, which feels like a pretty major clue to where the series will be headed in the future.

Now that The Big Bang Theory has ended, we’d expect Young Sheldon to get an even bigger push from CBS, and the best way to expand the show’s appeal is to make it clear that the show’s about a whole range of fascinating characters, and not just the name we know.

Expect major plotlines for the likes of Sheldon’s older brother, Georgie and Sheldon’s twin sister, Missy (Revord) in season four.

Sheldon will still be the central figure, reflected in the new credits’ neat addition of constantly changing costumes for our lead, ensuring he’s still the main focus, but we’d expect everyone else’s roles to be a bit more beefed up next season.
