The Christmas movie special Zoey's Extraordinary Christmas has released its first trailer, and confirmed the official release date.

Fans of Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist were devastated after the musical comedy-drama was dropped by NBC after just two seasons. But hopes were revived when the show's producer Lionsgate confirmed it would be back for a two-hour festive movie on streaming service Roku.

The trailer has teased an all-singing, all-dancing return at "the most wonderful time of the year", with titular character Zoey Clarke, played by Jane Levy, and her genderfluid neighbour Mo, played by Alex Newell.

When the festive special was announced, Roku exec Colin Davis said the original show is unique because it "doesn't just entertain people, it speaks to them".

"That connection with the audience is what makes bringing a holiday-themed film like Zoey to life with the original cast so special," Davis added.

"We are absolutely thrilled to call Zoey's Extraordinary Christmas our first Roku Original film and make it available to both long-time fans and new ones on The Roku Channel this holiday."

After the show was cancelled, die-hard fans took to Twitter with the hashtag #savezoeysplaylist to drum up support for its renewal. Series creator Austin Winsberg encouraged the campaign, saying: "I refuse to believe the show is dead."

Production company Lionsgate agreed, saying in a statement: "In a world where finding loyal and passionate audiences is never easy, we believe there must be a home for this great, award-winning show with a passionate and dedicated following."

However, at the time of writing, there is still no news on a third season.

Zoey's Extraordinary Christmas will be available on Roku streaming devices & TVs, Sky Q and NOW streaming sticks on December 1, 2021.
