Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist star Jane Levy has broken her silence after the series was shockingly cancelled last week.

The musical series was dropped by NBC after two seasons when negotiations to move it from the network's broadcast channel to its streaming service Peacock broke down.

Speaking to Vanity Fair, Levy said: "Honestly, the main feeling I have is gratitude. I feel like I did everything that I wanted to with this show.

"If it's over, I don't have any regrets. I gave it my all and so did everybody else."

Levy went on to talk about how the show connected with viewers emotionally, saying: "Our show is about connection and empathy and community and grief. These are all the themes that we're dealing with globally.

"People write to me out of nowhere and say that they were able to process their grief…through watching. It has been such an amazing relationship between the people who watch it and the people who perform it."

The actress also went on to compare Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist with other shows airing on NBC and argued that it provides something different for viewers.

"I'm sorry, but I have to say this: I look at the new NBC lineup, and it's like, 'Okay, we could watch a lot of shows about crime and guns,'" Levy said.

"Our show is about love. It's a real shame to take that off the air… I feel like it's the wrong move."

Levy later took to Twitter to explain her comment further, writing: "Woah! internet! My comment about NBC making the 'wrong move' was an aside & if you heard me, it was said with a sigh & not to trash.

"Also my best friend is on an amazing show that at times includes guns and crime. Ok I'm going to float down a river for 4 days bye."

While there's still hope that Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist could find a new home, nothing has been decided yet.

After the cancellation was announced, series creator Austin Winsberg called for a fan campaign to save the series – #SaveZoeysPlaylist – telling fans on Twitter that he refuses "to believe the show is dead".

"Okay. Here we are. The news is out. NBC/Peacock have decided not to go forward with another season. We can discuss that later. But right now I refuse to believe the show is dead," he wrote after the news broke.

"There is too much love and goodwill and the fan base is incredible. Now here is what I need. I believe we can have a real chance somewhere else. But the more fan support we can throw behind it - the better."
