A British boxer has sparked outrage by contrasting the search efforts for missing Cardiff footballer Emiliano Sala and those for Madeleine McCann.

Ohara Davies, 26, criticised the decision to call off the search for 28-year-old Sala after just three days, following the disappearance of the plane he was travelling in on Monday.

Sala was making his way to Cardiff ahead of his first day’s training with his new side when the plane crashed near Guernsey.

But Davies has questioned how the search has been called off after a ‘few days’ when ‘millions’ is still being spent on the search for Madeleine McCann, who went missing in Portugal at the age of three in 2007.

“If you call off this search after only a few days, please answer this 1 question for us,” Davies tweeted.

“Why was millions being pumped and still is being pumped into finding Madeline McCann 12 years after her disappearance? This is not fair.”

The boxer, who is a former WBC Silver and WBA International champion at super lightweight, has been condemned for his comments by the majority on social media, although some people have backed him up.

Davies was told that ‘it really isn’t’ comparable by one and that some thoughts are ‘best not publicised’.

Guernsey Police called off the search on Thursday afternoon, nearly three days after the plane disappeared, with the chances of survival in freezing cold water seen as nearly impossible.

“My team have just met to review the search and rescue operation which has been underway since the plane disappeared on Monday night,” Harbour Master Captain David Barker

“Despite the best efforts of air and search assets from the Channel Islands, UK and France, which has covered an area of approximately 1,700sq miles – with a significant amount of this searched more than once – and having examined mobile phone data and satellite imagery, we have been unable to find any trace of the aircraft, the pilot or the passenger.

“We reviewed all the info available to us, as well as knowing what emergency equipment was on board, and have taken the difficult decision to end the search.

“The chances of survival at this stage are extremely remote.

“Next of kin have been informed of this development, and my thoughts go out to the family of the pilot at this difficult time.”

Sala’s sister pleaded with rescue teams to continue the search, as a petition was launched online and a number of high profile footballers backed her call.

“Please don’t stop the search. We appreciate the effort but please don’t stop the search,” Romina Sala said.

“At the bottom of my heart I know Emiliano is a fighter and he and the pilot are somewhere in the middle of Channel. They are not going to give up so please don’t stop the search.”
