Needing a miracle: Saints give Hughes one match to save his job, as Allardyce and Moyes lurk

Mark Hughes has one match to save his job, with the Daily Mirror reporting the Southampton manager will be sacked if they fail to win their next match against Watford.

The Welshman finds himself under increasing pressure following the Saints’ 6-1 hammering at Manchester City.

The result leaves the club just one point above the relegation places in 16th place.

That result means Southampton have just one win all season – a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace way back on September 1. Since then they have only scored one goal from open play all season, and Danny Ings’ penalty at the Eithad Stadium was the Saints’ first goal in five Premier League matches.

According to The Daily Mirror, the Saints board are ready to ditch Hughes if he doesn’t pick up maximum points this weekend, with David Moyes and Sam Allardyce among the top candidates to take over.

Hughes saved the club from relegation after replacing Mauricio Pellegrino in March of this year, but he has failed to build on that this season.

Fans are frustrated with the style of play served up under the former Stoke boss and the board are reportedly willing to act if Hughes picks up anything less than three points on Saturday.

Premier League veterans Allardyce and Moyes are likely to be on the board’s radar, but former boss Gordon Strachan has also been mentioned by some supporters.

The Mirror also claim that former Monaco manager Leonardo Jardim is popular at St Mary’s, although he is now set to move to the Chinese Super League.

Javi Gracia’s Watford will travel to the south coast hoping to bounce back from their surprise 1-0 defeat at Newcastle on Saturday.
