Rovers have sanctioned a League Two loan move for right back James Brown.

Brown will spend the season with League Two new boys Stockport County after a loan deal was agreed.

The 24-year-old has been freed up to move out on loan following Rovers’ signing of Callum Brittain.

The deal with Stockport was agreed earlier this week and confirmed ahead of their EFL return against Barrow.

Brown arrived at Rovers in January from Irish side Drogheda United and signed a long-term extension, through to 2024, the following month.

He played six times for Rovers Under-23s in Premier League 2 before making his senior debut on the final day of the season at Birmingham City.

Brown started Rovers’ opening friendly at Accrington Stanley but wasn’t involved thereafter, first through injury and then due to his expected loan move.

Brittain is Rovers’ sole permanent signing in this window and is expected to be first-choice on the right side of the defence following the departure of Ryan Nyambe.

Joe Rankin-Costello is now expected to provide the competition to Brittain following Brown’s loan move.

Stockport were promoted back to the EFL, after an 11-year absence, when winning the National League in 2021/22.

Stockport's Director of Football Simon Wilson said: “James is a player who was regularly flagged by the scouting department last season and it was no surprise to see Blackburn recently extend his contract after an impressive six-months.

“James is a tenacious front foot defender who will add quality and competition to the positions on the right hand side.”
