Rooney moved to Cheshire 12 years ago and lives there with his wife, Coleen, and three children – Kai, Klay and Kit.

He signed for Manchester United from Everton in 2004 aged just 18 and, after a hugely successful period at the club, rejoined his boyhood club in Liverpool this summer.

Yahoo Sport has contacted Cheshire Police for comment.

Rooney who announced his international retirement last week after 53 goals for his country in 119 appearances, spent the evening at a bar in Alderley Edge, believed to be The Bubble Room.

A fellow customer, Shropshire cricketer Jack McIver, posted a picture of himself with the 31-year-old at the venue on social media at 10pm.
