Rory McIlroy gearing up for DP World Tour title run after FedExCup win
Rory McIlroy may have just won a historic third FedExCup, but he’s not ready for a break yet.
McIlroy is now set to play in three DP World Tour events over the next month, starting with the BMW PGA Championship next week at Wentworth. He also holds about a 330-point lead in the DP World Tour’s points race as the season enters its final months.
Though he’s only played in seven events on that tour so far this season, McIlroy is in the perfect position to make a run and win a second season-long race in 2022.

“I have a whopping one week off coming up and then I go to Europe for three out of four weeks, playing quite a bit over there,” McIlroy said after his win at the Tour Championship on Sunday. “But maybe that's a little less intense than what we've just been through the last three weeks in the playoffs here … I think when you win and when you do things, it energizes you more than anything else. It makes you want to do it more.”
After the BMW Championship, McIlroy will play in the Italian Open for the first time starting on Sept. 15 — which also gives him a look at the Marco Simone Golf Club in Rome, which will play host to the Ryder Cup next year — and then the Alfred Dunhil Links Championship starting on Sept. 29.
Once that stretch ends, the DP World Tour will head to Spain and Portugal in October for a four-tournament stint. There is just one event left then before the DP World Tour Championship on Nov. 17 in Dubai.
Outside of the four major championships, McIlroy has played twice on the DP World Tour. He finished third at the Dubai Desert Classic and then T12 at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in January.
McIlroy has won the DP World Tour’s title three times in the past, too, first in 2012 and then in both 2014 and 2015. Collin Morkiawa won last season, which made him the only American in the Tour’s history to do so.
Though he still has plenty of work to do to get there, a second title would cap an incredible and historic run for McIlroy in perhaps the best way possible.
McIlroy: Playing with LIV Golfers will be ‘hard for me to stomach’
When McIlroy tees off at the BMW PGA Championship, he’ll do so alongside about 18 LIV Golf Invitational Series members.
A big group of former Tour players who have defected to the controversial Saudi Arabian-backed league will be competing in the DP World Tour event. Though they’ve been suspended from the PGA Tour, the DP World Tour allows them to compete in this event — though the league will fine them.
As McIlroy has been by far the strongest opponent to LIV Golf since its rumored inception, he knows it’s going to be weird at Wentworth.
“I hate what it's doing to the game of golf. I hate it. I really do,” McIlroy said Sunday of LIV Golf. “Like it's going to be hard for me to stomach going to Wentworth in a couple of weeks' time and seeing 18 of them there. That just doesn't sit right with me.
“So yeah, I feel strongly. I believe what I'm saying are the right things, and I think when you believe that what you're saying is the right things, you're happy to stick your neck out on the line.”
