What’s your new airport style tribe?

Seven countries have now been added to the travel green list, bringing the grand total to 36 destinations which Brits can travel to this summer.

While I can bet your holiday wardrobe has been planned and raring to go all lockdown long, it’s likely you haven’t given much thought to your travelling looks, beyond a face mask.

The thought of nearing your boarding gate might feel rather exciting for some (cue a summery dress, wedge espadrilles and three books to read on-board), but could make others feel apprehensive, and thus opt for the most functional of looks to be prepared. It means there are a few very different airport style tribes emerging this summer...

Luxe

The phrase ‘save for best’ might not be one actress Diane Kruger swears by. For her flight to the South of France last month, the stylish star paired a sweet embellished knit with a matching mini skirt, teaming them with pearl-studded Jimmy Choo sandals.

Try it yourself: To be fair to Kruger, a knitted co-ord is a wise choice on a chilly flight, though that’s not to say yours has to cost hundreds of pounds: head to Mango and Zara for chic alternatives. Leather sandals are a smart option too - just swap them for warm thick socks on the plane.

Practical chic

Laurent’s roomy trousers and simple T-shirt look makes for a minimal ensemble, while her giant Christian Dior tote and sharp black accessories pull it altogether and add edge. For a landing in Nice airport, the actress gave a lesson in pared-back French style.

Try it yourself: Swap the suede mules for chunky sandals or trainers and Laurent has nailed a practical, chic travelling look. Stash a light knit in the tote (which can later double as a stylish beach bag) and throw in a pouch to avoid digging around for your phone and purse.

Quirky

An early morning flight, combined with the mad dash to ensure you have your vaccine passport and test results packed and ready to go, means a comfy, cheery outfit is a must. Mirren recently opted for a green look, pairing a checked midi skirt with a matching cardigan and canvas trainers.

Try it yourself: Pick out one of the colours in your printed skirt and coordinate with the rest of your look: it’ll ensure you look pulled together, and having a clear idea of what you’re looking for will narrow your options when getting ready. Note Mirren’s bum bag: going hands-free ensures you can juggle those all-important documents.

Casual cool

The actress, who most recently portrayed Anne Boleyn in the Channel 5 miniseries, cut a casual figure in acid-wash denim co-ord when travelling last month. Leather accessories added a slick element, but her low-key look would have ensured she was comfortable.

Try it yourself: Denim typically isn’t the softest fabric to wear on even a short haul journey, so ensure yours has added stretch. Air-conditioning means you might be grateful for longer hems, so try culottes or slim-fit jeans instead of a skirt. A long-sleeved T-shirt and an oversized denim jacket are perfect light layers for landing in sunny climes.

Glamour

The model was spotted arriving in Nice last month in an ensemble that wouldn’t look out of place at Le Club 55 - Riviera regular Joan Collins would be proud. Her tailored ivory suit and printed silk bandeau made for a smart pairing: an ideal look if you have lunch plans once your flight lands.

Try it yourself: A crisp white suit stands little chance of coming out the other end of your standard economy flight looking this immaculate, so it’s worth opting for something lower maintenance and a little more practical. Oat-coloured linen is a great alternative: it’s smart but comfortable, and as it’s prone to creasing naturally, it won’t look scruffy. Note Goulart’s equally glamorous accessories which will add a luxe feel to simple travelling looks.

What to wear: Blazer + linen trousers + printed blouse + sandals
