Ashley Tisdale opens up about her struggles with alopecia during her Disney Channel days

Although Ashley Tisdale has achieved many things since her Disney Channel days – like launching her own wellness brand, Frenshe, and releasing three albums – we will always have a special place in our hearts for her role as Sharpay Evans in High School Musical – those were the days, people. Sharpay's hair was always larger than life, so it came as a shock to us when Ashley revealed she's been struggling with hair loss and alopecia since her early 20s.

The now 37-year-old spoke candidly about her experiences with hair loss in a recent video posted to her Instagram. In the caption, Ashley writes:

"Alopecia and hair loss are fairly common, but a lot of people feel embarrassed to talk about these issues. Any type of hair loss can affect your self-esteem, especially if you feel like you’re the only one going through it. That’s why I want to talk about it openly—because it’s nothing to be ashamed of."

The actress explains that she noticed a "bald patch" in her early 20s and believes it was triggered as she was "going through a stressful time".

Although alopecia can be caused by a number of things, Ashley believes stress management has been key in living with the condition. She also goes on to discuss treatments she's previously tried, like PRP (AKA platelet-rich plasma), which involves injecting your own plasma into the scalp to help stimulate hair growth.

Ashley added that the "hair grew back and it always does, thankfully, but there's been a couple times in my life where I've had very stressful events and have noticed that [alopecia] will come back".

According to the NHS, 8 million women struggle with some form of hair loss or alopecia in the UK, so it's refreshing to see a celeb discussing the topic so openly. We salute you, Ashley.
