The Batman will return in a sequel that we imagine will not be called Batman Returns.

A hugely-anticipated announcement about a second Batman film was made at the CinemaCon event on Tuesday (April 26) by Warner Bros, along with the news that star Robert Pattinson and director Matt Reeves are both back.

Reeves announced (via Deadline): "Thank you all for your tremendous support for The Batman. We couldn't have gotten here without the faith and enthusiasm of all your teams around the world.

"I'm excited to jump back into this world for the next chapter."

A sequel is no surprise considering The Batman has now made more than $750 million at the worldwide box office, and already surpassed streaming expectations for Warner Bros' HBO Max service in the US in the last week.

The original teed up a storyline for The Batman 2 with the appearance of Marvel's Eternals star Barry Keoghan in an extended cameo as an iconic Worlds of DC villain. (No further spoilers here!)

Reeves is producing a streaming TV spin-off for Colin Farrell's The Penguin that will serve as both a prequel and sequel to The Batman, focusing on Gotham City's underworld.

A second streaming spinoff set within the ranks of the Gotham City Police Department was also in the works, but was shelved by DC bosses prior to the release of The Batman.

"That one actually is put on hold. We're not really doing that," Reeves recently told host Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast.

"The series was going to be kind of like 'Prince of the City,' where it was going to be Year One because the movie is Year Two, and I wanted it to be the first appearance. But it wasn't going to be a Batman story."

Some of those ideas could ultimately be folded into The Batman 2 if Reeves is interested in revisiting them.
