Last Tango in Halifax season 5: What you need to know
We've not seen Last Tango in Halifax on screen since 2016, so fans of the show will be thrilled that our first glimpse at the highly-anticipated upcoming series is here.
The first trailer for the next instalment of Sally Wainwright’s BAFTA winning drama have been released, ahead of its return to BBC One in February.
Last Tango in Halifax season 5: What's it about?
Series leads Anne Reid, Derek Jacobi, Nicola Walker and Sarah Lancashire are seen reunited with Timothy West, making his return to Last Tango in Halifax.
"Alan (Derek Jacobi) and Celia (Anne Reid) are now seven years into their marriage but, having moved into a desirable bungalow with stunning views across the Calder Valley, they aren’t quite seeing eye to eye. It isn’t just their differing politics that’s a source of tension; Alan’s new supermarket job brings an unexpected challenge in the form of a wild local lad, and at Far Slack Farm Gillian (Nicola Walker) faces trouble with a giraffe," the BBC said.
“In the beginning she always had the upper hand because he was still besotted when they first met and now, after seven years, he’s not quite so besotted,” Anne Reid explained at a press screening ahead of the new series airing.
“I think she’s the one who would die if he left her. I know she’s difficult but I think he holds the whip now,” she added.
Derek Jacobi agreed, referencing the fact Alan is determined to get himself a part-time job to keep busy, despite Celia’s disapproval.
“I think I’m on the turn. I need a little bit of my independence and can see flaws in her that I couldn’t see before, and can make my opinion known. It is an effort, I’m on thin ice with her all the time but I’m determined to make my case and be my own man,” he said.
Derek added he feels Alan has become a little bored in the relationship and wants to branch out.
“Getting a job, getting out, meeting other people helps,” he said.
The show's creator Sally Wainwright has said she wanted to ensure this new series puts Alan front and centre.
“I was trying to think of stories that would revolve around Alan for this series, because they should. The two big stories this series are all about Alan. For me Alan has always been the centre of sanity in a mad, mad world,” she said.
Meanwhile John (Tony Gardner) is back on the scene, and Caroline (Sarah Lancashire) finds herself entangled in an emotional debacle with someone at work. Into all of this jets Alan’s brother Ted (Timothy West) on holiday from New Zealand. But it turns out he’s only bought a one-way ticket… and he hasn’t come alone.

Also returning for the new series are: Ronni Ancona as Judith, Josh Bolt as Raff, Dean Smith as William, Louis Greatorex as Lawrence, Paul Copley as Harry, Katherine Rose Morley as Ellie, Felix Johnson as Angus, and Rachel Leskovacas P.C. Cheryl. Caroline’s daughter Flora, now five years old, will be played by Issacah June Zaman Hatzer, with Calamity, now age seven, played by Tilly Kaye.
Joining the cast this series will be Lu Corfield (Sex Education, Clink), Anna Leong Brophy (NightWatch Man, EastEnders), Noorul Choudhury (Ackley Bridge), Liam McCheyne (The Bay, Coronation Street), television newcomer Catherine Campion, Sophie McIntosh (Brave New World, Shortland Street), Rick S Carr (Brassic, Ackley Bridge) and Buckso Dhillon-Woolleyy (Aladdin, Unforgotten).
Sally Wainwright, creator and writer, said: “Yet again the entire Last Tango cast has proved to be so wonderful together, so uplifting, heart-warming, touching and funny, as they explore Celia and Alan’s relationship further, under the brilliant breath of fresh air that Gareth Bryn’s direction has given them.”
