Netflix officially made all our lives complete when they confirmed Black Mirror would definitely be coming back for a fifth series way back in early 2018. The announcement was made on social media, with the streaming service revealing that Charlie Brooker is back on board to pen the upcoming instalment of the programme.

Do we have a Black Mirror season 5 trailer yet?

Yes! The first teaser dropped in March 2018:

And then Netflix treated us to a proper trailer on 15 May 2019, which shows hot priest from Fleabag Andrew Scott and Miley Cyrus(!) amongst the talented cast. While it doesn't give ~much~ away in terms of content, we already know it's going to be good:

And then, on 28 May 2019, Netflix dropped dedicated episode teasers for all three episodes. Here's 'Smithereens':

Here's 'Striking Vipers':

And here's 'Rachel, Jack And Ashley, Too':

What will happen in Black Mirror season 5?

On 22 May 2019, Netflix revealed more details about the three episodes that make up season five, including storyline teasers and episode names.

First up, let's talk 'Smithereens', which stars Andrew Scott, Damson Idris, and Topher Grace, which tells the story of a cab driver with an agenda who becomes the centre of attention on a day that rapidly spirals out of control.

In 'Rachel, Jack And Ashley, Too', a lonely teenager yearns to connect with her favourite pop star - played by Miley Cyrus - whose charmed existence isn’t quite as rosy it appears. Angourie Rice and Madison Davenport also star.

Finally, 'Striking Vipers', two estranged college friends reunite in later life, triggering a series of events that could alter their lives forever. Anthony Mackie, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Nicole Beharie, Pom Klementieff, and Ludi Lin make up the cast.

Who will star in Black Mirror season 5?

Netflix revealed season 5 will star Anthony Mackie, Miley Cyrus, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Topher Grace, Damson Idris, Andrew Scott, Nicole Beharie, Pom Klementieff, Angourie Rice, Madison Davenport and Ludi Lin.

On 12 December 2018, Miley Cyrus confirmed her connection to the next season of Black Mirror, telling Howard Stern that she is "really proud" of her work on the series.

Though she didn't reveal too many details, she did explain there are a "lot of different sides" to her character. "There's a lot of dimension to it, and actually it was while the devastation of Malibu was happening, and it was a really weird learning experience for me because I was so far from home and the show is already really dark, and it's already kind of eerie when you're there the whole time," she said.

"But I learned a lot about myself, and I think I was able to use that and put that into it."

How many episodes are in Black Mirror season 5?

Despite previous series containing up to six episodes (series three and four, for example), season five will only include three episodes - much like seasons one and two. The titles of which are currently under wraps.

Will there be Black Mirror sequels and prequels?

In new book Inside Black Mirror, creator Charlie Brooker says they have considered sequels to past episodes, following up on the technology or characters to find out where they are now. In particular, 'San Junipero' - though in the follow up he would focus on new characters instead of Yorkie (Mackenzie Davis) and Kelly (Gugu Mbatha-Raw).

"I wouldn't necessarily want to revisit those characters, because we're very happy with where they ended up and their story," he explained. "But that's not to say that we couldn't revisit that world, if there was a compelling reason to do so."

When will Black Mirror season 5 drop?

Despite season 5 being pushed back thanks to the release of choose-your-own-adventure Black Mirror movie Bandersnatch in December 2018, Netflix confirmed on 15 May 2019 that the next instalment drops on Wednesday, June 5th, exclusively on Netflix.

What even is Black Mirror?

For anyone unfamiliar with the programme, Black Mirror first launched on Channel 4, before finding a home on Netflix in its third season. Since then, the show has consistently been made up of six episodes per series.

And while most of those chapters might leave us all wanting to plunge our phones into the ocean, we have every faith that more uplifting episodes in the vein of 'San Junipero' could be in the pipeline soon.

Fingers crossed.
