New Boulevard Theatre announces first production with Sweeney Todd creative team
Soho’s newest theatre, the Boulevard, will open its doors with the London premiere of musical Ghost Quartet.
Bill Buckhurst will direct the show by Dave Malloy, writer of Broadway hit Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812, from October. He reunites the creative team behind the 2015 production of Sweeney Todd, which sold out when it ran in a pie shop in Tooting Arts Club, before transferring to the West End and New York.
Ghost Quartet will have musical direction by Benjamin Cox, design by Simon Kenny, movement by Georgina Lamb, lighting design by Emma Chapman and sound design by David Gregory.
It tells four stories of people drinking and singing songs about love, loss and spirits – of the alcoholic and mystical kind.
The musical will run together with a programme of late-night and Sunday performances covering cabaret, jazz, comedy, classical music and poetry. Comedians Nina Conti and Kiri Pritchard-McLean are on the line-up, with the Black Cat Cabaret performing throughout November and December.
Property entrepreneur Fawn James, whose grandfather Paul Raymond was dubbed The King of Soho, has overseen a multi-million-pound overhaul of Walker’s Court and announced this new season alongside artistic director Rachel Edwards.
Edwards is also the founder of Tooting Arts Club, where Sweeney Todd had its debut.
Ghost Quartet will run from October 31- January 4 at the Boulevard Theatre.
