Céline’s Spring/Summer 2023 collection is an ode to Kate Moss’ 2000s era

Today Céline released images of it’s ‘Céline 16’ collection entitled ‘La Collection De Saint-Topez’ which the brand describes as “A renaissance of Hedi Simane’s 2000 era.”

The clothing has a distinctly Indie sleaze feeling, only cemented by the fact that the official video for the collection, filmed in Saint-tropez and Ramatuelle in October 2022, is soundtracked by The Libertines and features ‘Music When The Lights Go Out.’ The song was released on the cult album ‘The Libertines’ back in 2004.

“Friends and accomplices for the past 20 years, Hedi Slimane reunites once again with Carl Barât and Pete Doherty from The Libertines for the Saint-Tropez collection,” the maison explains of the collaboration between the two.

We need no reminding that Libertines’ front man Pete Doherty famously dated Kate Moss circa 2004, which produced some of the most iconic ‘power couple’ images of all time. The duo attending Glastonbury in their iconic indie-glam outfits, Kate clad in her mud-caked Hunter wellies are etched in our mind forever.

The whole collection has a distinct Kate Moss in the early 2000s vibe to it, from the tough model-off-duty boots to the idiosyncratic waistcoats, black sailor caps, skinny scarves and of course Mossy’s early-noughties signature micro shorts.

“Throughout the 2000s, Hedi Slimane dressed various figures of the British and American rock scene, acting as both their couturier and preferred portraitist,” the brand reveals, describing the mood of the show as “Indie summer.”

The show also brings back one more retro trend we thought had been relegated to the fashion archives, “The Saint-Tropez collection marks the return of the ‘the original skinny jeans’ that Hedi Slimane created and launched in the 2000s,” the brand explains, “This silhouette grounded by skinny jeans and narrow shoulders was adopted by both the British and American rock scenes between 2000-2007 and soon spread around the world.”

The skinny jeans by Hedi Slimane for Céline’s latest collection are low-rise, in japanese blue or black denim. They are also proposed in supple lambskin leather, according to Céline they can be worn with ballerina flats, mary janes or the new Céline “biker” boots offset with open buckles.

Skinny jeans and Indie sleaze? Never has there been a better time to be a copy Kate.
