Call the Midwife offers first look at series 12 as filming begins

Call the Midwife has offered a first look at series 12 with a couple of new photos.

Filming for the highly-anticipated new series has finally begun, as stars Jenny Agutter and Linda Bassett stepped in front of the camera for the first time this year to officially mark the start of production.

"This year Jenny Agutter (Sr Julienne) and Linda Bassett (Nurse Crane) were there to provide us with the traditional clapperboard shot that marks the beginning of the first scene of the new season," said a post on the show's Facebook page.

The show also teased the forthcoming festive special, which will air later this year.

"Our team began filming again just a few hours ago on a brand new Christmas Special and Series 12 of Call the Midwife!" the post continued.

There are set to be some big changes to filming this year.

Helen George, who plays Trixie Franklin, recently revealed that this will be the first time in a few years that COVID restrictions won't be in place.

"There will be no perspex," she said. "We can kiss, we can touch and do what we do. It will be wonderful!"

The show's official Twitter account recently shared a photo of Helen on set.

Meanwhile, rumours recently emerged suggesting that Call the Midwife could soon be coming to an end.

However, Ella Bruccoleri, who plays, Sister Frances, downplayed the suggestions and claimed that the beloved BBC series "will go on and on and on".

"When people want to stay together, they stay together. And that's what's so beautiful about the show. So who knows. It could go on for years," she said.

Despite cancellation rumours, Call the Midwife has already been renewed for a 13th season to follow the upcoming 12th instalment, due to premiere in 2023.

Call the Midwife airs on BBC One.
