Call the Midwife favourite Helen George is back as Trixie Franklin for this year's festive special.

Having been abroad in Italy since halfway through season 11, taking care of her dying godmother, hopefully this'll mean the nurse and love interest Matthew Aylward (played by Olly Rix) can pick up where they left off.

The star's return was announced via social media, with a glamorous George pictured on set in costume with a Christmas tree just behind her.

"Behind the scenes on the Call The Midwife Christmas Special 2022: Trixie prepares..." teased a cryptic caption, suggesting something huge on the horizon.

"Give Trixie an happy ending we want to see her thrive" and "I'm praying for a happy ending for Trixie, she's had so much heartache," commented two Midwife fans.

"I feel like this could be Trixie contemplating the changes marriage to [Matthew] might bring. Like leaving Nonnatus House. I want her to finally find love and be happy, but, I hope that won't mean Trixie leaving the show," theorised someone else.

Will it be a merry Christmas, or one to forget for Trixie?

Rewinding back to the Christmas 2021 episode, you may remember Leonie Elliott's Lucille Anderson drunkenly crashing up the stairs the day before her wedding; Stephen McGann's Dr Patrick Turner then applied a leech to combat her swollen eye.

"It was prosthetics, and my eyes were closed the whole time, pretty much," revealed Elliott of this wince-inducing moment. "And that took some getting used to, because I was walking around set, and it was literally just being able to see out of one eye.

"Weirdly, in a way, it did start to hurt. I mean, it's probably just my mind playing tricks on me. But, yeah, it did start to hurt."

Call the Midwife airs on BBC One.
