As an in-demand supermodel she was well-connected to the party scenes of the 1980s and 1990s, and is famed for rock star boyfriends including Mick Jagger and Eric Clapton.

However, Carla Bruni has insisted she is not a "cool" mother and has raised her two children with an "anxious" parenting style.

The former first lady of France, 54, has a son Aurelien, 20, from her relationship with French philosophy teacher and radio host Raphael Enthoven, and a daughter Giulia, 10, with her ex-president husband Nicholas Sarkozy.

She told The Sunday Times' Style magazine: "I am a very anxious mother.

"When they were little I didn’t want them to fall. With my son I don’t want him to have a motorbike, take drugs. I’m not a cool mother."

Bruni, who built a successful singing career after winding down her modelling, added: "When they were babies I took care of them night and day."

In 2008, she married Sarkozy – who had been president of France since the previous year – and then served as first lady until 2012.

At the same time, she became a step-mother to his three sons from his two previous marriages – Pierre, now 36; Jean, 35; and Louis, 24.

Bruni has recently returned to the fashion world, and walked the catwalk for Donatella Versace as a tribute to her late brother Gianni Versace.

Of how she feels modelling in her fifties, Bruni joked: "Old and fat!”

The singer referenced a quote from actress Sharon Stone, discussing appearing in a Valentino show, who said: "I thought I was tall and skinny but when I got there I realised I was short and fat."

She added: "That’s me! But as Einstein once said, ‘Everything is relative.’”
