Iconic home makeover series, Changing Rooms, is back on Channel 4. The 'king of maximalism' Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, Jordan Cluroe and Russell Whitehead of 2LG Studio, and carpenter and joiner Tibby Singh are joined by two new interior designers – sustainable designer Micaela Sharp and queen of retro Whinnie Williams – to help transform homes across the UK.

Changing Rooms, in partnership with Dulux, aims to inspire not just decorators on the show, but the DIY-ers at home looking to bring a little more excitement to their living spaces.

In the first episode for series two of the reboot, Laurence and Whinnie brought their creative and individual flair to Tunbridge Wells to help neighbours Eddie and Lotta and Charlotte and Stuart transform each other's non-functioning family living rooms.

We saw the designers tackle panelling, a trend that has certainly shown no sign of waning in recent years, with related hashtags on both Instagram and TikTok highlighting some incredible wall transformations that goes above and beyond a typical feature wall.

Once you've completed our step-by-step guide on wall panelling, it's time for the fun part: painting it – and this makes for a great weekend project.

'Wall panelling is very traditional, so however you choose to paint it, it will always be a nod to the classic character of your home,' Marianne Shillingford, Creative Director at Dulux, explains. 'Panelling literally invites you to add colour to the space, as bringing in a two-toned wall and panelling combination not only encourages you to experiment with different hues, it also helps this quirky feature become a true focal point. You don’t even have to be very bold with colours either: using a duo of soft shades like Dulux Heritage Stone Green and Powder Colour helps complete the panelling’s timeless look.'

Marianne shares her top tips for how to give your wall panelling the ultimate glow-up with paint:

1. Carefully duct tape between the panelling and your wall with a low-tac masking tape for delicate surfaces.

2. Lightly sand the panels using a flexible sanding pad to buff out any splinters. This softens the surface and improves adhesivity.

3. Prime the panels using Dulux Heritage Undercoat – a quick-drying water-based undercoat, which provides excellent adhesion, protection and a beautiful finish for interior wood.

4. Cover the panels with two coats of Dulux Heritage Stone Green in the Eggshell finish.

5. Start painting in-between the panels with a paint brush to ensure you cover the grooves, and then use a small roller for the larger areas.

6. Once the paint is nearly dry, remove the duct tape from the wall and reapply to the top of the panelling to ensure a clean barrier between it and the wall.

7. Once the duct tape is applied, seal it in with the base wall colour, Dulux Heritage Powder Colour, using a medium-sized paint brush.

8. Paint all the edges with a paint brush, and then cover the wall using a roller.

9. Now sit back, relax, and admire your handiwork.
