The classic 90s movie Ghost could be getting a reboot from Magic Mike's Channing Tatum.

The original starred Patrick Swayze as the spirit of a man murdered, as he tries desperately to break through into the material world to warn his girlfriend (Demi Moore) she's in danger.

A remake has long been rumoured and now Tatum has confirmed to Vanity Fair that his production company has secured the rights to the film and he is attached to play the Swayze role.

"We have the rights to Ghost," he told the publication.

Tatum went on to explain that his team is rethinking ways to update the classic romantic drama, since the original contained some problematic stereotypes out of date with today's audiences.

"We’re going to do something different," he explained. "I think it needs to change a little bit and have our [stamp]."

Tatum would seem like a natural choice to take over the Patrick Swayze role, since both actors were known for their extensive dance experience.

One of the most striking scenes in the original Ghost featured Swayze's character slow-dancing with Demi Moore after possessing the body of a psychic medium (Whoopi Goldberg).

The film made more than $500 million at the box office when it was released in 1990, and earned Whoopi Goldberg a Best Supporting Actress Academy Award and an original screenplay Oscar for writer Bruce Joel Rubin.

Tatum is in the midst of a career resurgence, having starred in last year's The Lost City with Sandra Bullock. Next up, he returns to the Magic Mike franchise for the third and final film in the series.

Magic Mike's Last Dance will be released on February 10, 2023 in cinemas worldwide.
