Thompson & Morgan has announced its entries for Chelsea Flower Show's Plant of the Year

The Chelsea Flower Show plant of the year winners are selected by a panel of 100 experts "to promote the continuing work of breeders and nurseries in producing improved and exciting new plants," according to the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), who run the event.

Thomson and Thomson has now revealed four of the plants it has submitted for consideration this year.

In a release, the brand described the Azalea ‘Starstyle Pink’ as being "a unique new variety with compact growth, profuse unusual flowers twice a year, plus highly decorative lush evergreen foliage," which is "ideal for modern gardens."

The Weigela ‘Magic Carpet’, on the other hand, features abundant pink flowers and colour changing foliage.

Also entered by the brand is the Geranium ‘Intense’ which is described as a "neon pink sensation," which features "non-fading, vivid pink blooms" and is a "compact hardy perennial" which can "stand alongside annual summer bedding, while offering much more versatility."

Lastly, Thomson and Thomson have put Salvia 'A Little Bit' forward. A cross between Salvia nemorosa and Salvia pratensis, the resulting plant has a long flowering season, winter hardiness and features large bold blooms.

Whether any of these options will be awarded the top prize, however, remains to be seen.

Last year, the RHS Chelsea Flower Show Plant of the Year winner 2021 was Cercis canadensis, also known as "Eternal Flame". In second place was Allium "Lavender Bubbles" and third, a hybrid variety x Semponium "Sienna".

Who the plant of the year winner will be for 2022, we are yet to find out. This year, Chelsea will return once again to its traditional Maytime slot. For the first time in 2021, the we had an autumn show, as the delayed event took place in September. This meant that many of the usual flowers, plants and foliage we'd expect to see at Chelsea were replaced by other more autumnal varieties.

For the September show, designers had to think creatively in a different way to incorporate seasonal plants into their displays outside of the key growing season. If you're looking for growing inspiration for your own garden at any point in the year, there's plenty of inspiration here.
