Christine Baranski turned 70 on Monday and celebrated her birthday in style by walking the red carpet at the 2022 Met Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

The event is known for its star-studded guest list and striking outfits. It marks the opening of the annual fashion exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute.

Attending the Met Gala for the first time, the beloved actress looked chic in a custom-made Thom Browne suit, which she paired with a sleek floor-length black tailored cape and skirt as well as statement shades. Underneath her cape, she wore a corset over a classic white shirt and charming white bow tie.

The theme refers to the American Gilded Age, an era of prosperity, economic growth and innovation during the late 1800s and celebrates the opening of part two of the Costume Institute’s exhibition, In America: An Anthology of Fashion, which opens on 5 May 2022.

The Mamma Mia star told the New York Times ahead of the event: “Most of the ladies who will show up might not ever have worn a corset, or heavy velvet, or brocade, or beading. I’ve spent 15-hour days in costumes like that.”

She was not the only one to turn heads on the red carpet on Monday.

Glenn Close looked stunning in an all-pink Valentino ensemble for her first appearance at the iconic fashion event.
