The Crown has revealed its latest season five casting, with The Night Manager's Amir El-Masry signing on to play a younger version of Mohamed Al-Fayed.

The Egyptian billionaire is the father of the late Dodi, who died in a Paris car crash alongside lover Princess Diana in 1997. The events of season five are expected to focus on her crumbling relationship with Prince Charles and her death.

The casting was confirmed by Variety, and suggests that The Crown will delve into Mohamed Al-Fayed's backstory, with the older incarnation set to be played by Oslo's Salim Daw.

This isn't the first time that The Crown has featured flashbacks, with Claire Foy briefly reprising her role as Queen Elizabeth II in season four.

The Kite Runner's Khalid Abdalla will play Dodi, while Tenet and El-Masry's The Night Manager co-star Elizabeth Debicki takes over as Diana in season five following Emma Corrin's turn in season four.

Also part of the new cast for the next season is Harry Potter's Imelda Staunton as the Queen, The Affair's Dominic West as Prince Charles, Game of Thrones' Jonathan Pryce as Prince Philip, Sherwood's Lesley Manville as Princess Margaret and Elementary's Jonny Lee Miller as John Major.

As well as the return of The Crown in November this year, Netflix is reportedly working on a new prequel series set to focus on the events of the first half of the 20th century before Queen Elizabeth took to the throne.

The Crown season 5 will premiere in November 2022, while seasons one to four are now streaming on Netflix. Seasons one to three are also available on DVD and Blu-ray.
