Hollywood legend Dame Helen Mirren will feature in her first ever superhero film as she joins the cast of the eagerly-anticipated Shazam! sequel.

The Oscar-winner will play villain Hespera, the daughter of Atlas, in the acclaimed DC Comics sequel Shazam! Fury Of The Gods.

The Shazam! sequel features Zachary Levi reprising his role as the adult version of teenager Billy Batson (Asher Angel), who transforms into a superhero. Though he has been gifted with the powers of six gods - Soloman, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles and Mercury - he's also just trying to get through high school one day at a time.

Newcomer Rachel Zegler, who stars in Steven Spielberg's upcoming film adaptation of West Side Story, joins Mirren in the cast. It has been suggested that Mirren and Zegler will star as sisters, who "both may or may not be of ill intent" (via The Hollywood Reporter).

Zegler reacted to the news by tweeting: "I'M GONNA BE IN A MOVIE WITH HELEN MIRREN?????"

The original film was released in 2019, which went straight to the top of the global box office rankings upon its opening weekend, and grossing round $366m (£266m) worldwide.

Meanwhile, Dame Helen recently completed filming on action thriller Fast & Furious 9, and is currently shooting White Bird with Gillian Anderson, adapted from the book by R.J Palacia about a young Jewish girl hidden away by a boy and his family in Nazi-occupied France during World War II.

Shazam! Fury Of The Gods is expected to be released in cinemas in 2022.
