Death in Paradise star Ben Miller has joined the cast for This Christmas, a festive film which is being released by Sky Cinema.

Miller, who played DI Richard Poole on the BBC crime drama, will join Alfred Enoch (Harry Potter), Kaya Scodelario (Maze Runner) and Timothy Spall (Mr. Turner) in the film, which is being directed by Chris Foggin (Fisherman’s Friends).

The stacked cast also features Jeremy Irvine, Alexandra Roach and Sarah Niles, who have starred in Mamma Mia, Killing Eve and Ted Lasso respectively. The script is being written by Doc Martin screenwriter Alastair Galbraith, with Paramount distributing the film for international audiences.

The synopsis for the film, which is being released on Sky Cinema in December, reads: “Set in London during the busy yuletide season, This Christmas follows Adam (Enoch) and Emma (Scodelario) on their daily commute from the picture-perfect village of Langton to London, meeting the same passengers every day.

“Until, one morning, Adam takes it upon himself to break the unspoken taboo of talking to strangers on a train and invites the whole carriage to hold their own Christmas party…”

Miller, who has also appeared in Paddington 2 and Bridgerton, hasn’t had his character in the film disclosed. The actor appeared in Death in Paradise for the first two seasons, departing the show in 2014. He reprised his role as DI Poole in a guest appearance in 2021.

The programme is now led by Ralf Little, who has played DI Neville Parker since the ninth season. A Christmas special is due to air this year, while a spinoff series starring Kris Marshall as DI Humphrey Goodman is in development.

Earlier this year, the show was renewed for a 12th season, with BBC Commissioning Editor Tommy Bulfin commending its “compelling whodunnits” and “deeply satisfying plot twists”.

This Christmas will be released on Sky Cinema in December. Death in Paradise season 12 will premiere in January 2023.
