The star-studded Cannes Film Festival kicked off on Tuesday May 17, and seemingly nostalgic, Demi Moore yesterday shared a throwback photograph of her and ex-husband Bruce Willis at the event in 1997.

Taking to her Instagram, the 59-year-old posted the image to her feed, which showed the pair standing side-by-side on the red carpet while smiling and posing for photographers.

At the time, the couple, who were married for 11 years (from 1987 t0 2000), were at The Fifth Element premiere, which opened the festival.

The sci-fi film, released in the same year, stars Willis alongside Milla Jovovich.

For the 90s event, Moore wore a floral full-length coat layered over a belted black dress that she accessorised with diamond and ruby earrings and a coordinating necklace.

Meanwhile, Willis wore a classic tuxedo.

It was the same year as Princess Diana's unforgettable moment, when she arrived at the festival in a powder blue Catherine Walker dress, accompanied by Prince Charles.

The Love Sonia star, who shares three adult children with Willis - Rumer, 33, Tallulah, 28 and Scout, 30, captioned her aforementioned Instagram photo: 'From the Cannes archives, circa 1997.'

And it's received heartfelt comments from celebs and fans alike, including Willis' current wife Emma, who's been married to the multi Emmy-winning actor since 2009.

She commented: 'All the feels,' along with a heart emoji, concluding her message with: 'Beautiful'.

Willis shares eight-year-old Evelyn and Mabel, 10, with Emma.

Moore's Instagram post comes after it was announced in March that Willis had been diagnosed with Aphasia, a brain disorder that's 'impacting his cognitive abilities'.

Along with Emma and his daughters, Moore shared a message about the Motherless Brooklyn star's health.

They began: 'To Bruce’s amazing supporters, as a family we wanted to share that our beloved Bruce has been experiencing some health issues and has recently been diagnosed with aphasia, which is impacting his cognitive abilities.

'As a result of this and with much consideration Bruce is stepping away from the career that has meant so much to him.'

Addressing the Die Hard actor's devoted fanbase, they continued: 'This is a really challenging time for our family and we are so appreciative of your continued love, compassion and support.'

The family concluded: 'We are moving through this as a strong family unit, and wanted to bring his fans in because we know how much he means to you, as you do to him.

'As Bruce always says, "Live it up," and together we plan to do just that.'

Aphasia (which you can read up on here) affects typical ways people understand and use language - through reading, listening, speaking and typing or writing.

It's commonly caused by damage to the left side of the brain, often after a stroke, severe head injury, brain tumour or the result of dementia.

Earlier this month, Emma shared a series of photographs of her and Willis at the 2009 Met Gala, which showed them looking giddy and in good spirits.

She wrote in an accompanying caption: 'One of the many reason I fell hard for Bruce was because he never takes anything too seriously.

'As you can clearly see here at our first (and last) Met Gala, as newlyweds back in 2009.

'He’s just up for a good time no matter where or when and I’m here for it.'

She later shared a sweet video clip of Willis mucking around with 'the baby of our family' - Evelyn, ahead of her eighth birthday.

Emma signed off her caption with: 'You know what I’m gonna say…. it goes by so fast!'
