Don't Worry Darling: A complete explainer of the new trailer
Ever since we heard about Harry Styles and Florence Pugh starring in a film we were sold. And then even more so when he started dating the film's director Olivia Wilde. Well, finally after a lot of waiting, we've got a trailer for Don't Worry Darling and while it looks uh amazing, it's also just a *little* complex. Here's your handy Don't Worry Darling trailer explainer.
First off, the film itself follows an unhappy housewife called Alice (Pugh) who lives with her husband Jack (Styles) in a utopian experimental community in the Californian desert. However, she slowly begins to doubt her world, and explores the idea that her picture-perfect husband might be hiding dark secrets for his glamorous company.
Sure, it doesn't give a lot away but the trailer will, right? Well, it does and it doesn't. The trailer, which was released in the midst of the Met Gala (escandalo!) does take us through a bit more of how the story unfolds; Alice's seemingly perfect marriage and housewife lifestyle begins to slowly fall away from her as odd things start to happen and she questions the world around her. However, people were still left with questions.
Well, the good news is the internet loves answering questions. And one theory explaining what might be going has gained a lot of traction on Twitter. The theory is based on a comment director Olivia Wilde once made when speaking about the film, that the story takes some inspiration from The Matrix.
The theory goes that there has to be some sort of simulation, "Alice and Jack are in a 50s simulation and none of it is real. maybe it’s a video game like free guy where people 'plug into' a different world," writes the Twitter user.
"Only this world isn’t fully virtual. you can physically go into it, and Jack has created this idyllic world to live in and fulfil his fantasies of having a perfect wife doing everything for him. so in the trailer when she's trying to figure out what the men are doing."
She continues, "they’re actually exiting this simulation world while the women are trapped inside, not knowing there’s another way out. KiKi [Layne]'s character is the one who figures it out first and then Alice starts figuring it out too, like the empty egg. she starts to see through the simulation."
"... and its effect on her weakens more and more, and she gets grabbed when she tries to escape. this theory means that Jack is the real villain and not Chris pine’s character, and that sounds crazy, but this is the only theory I have that makes sense with the matrix theme."
