Matilda, the classic children's book, is getting another big-screen outing.

But unlike Danny DeVito's iconic 1996 film starring himself, Mara Wilson and Pam Ferris, this one is an adaptation of the stage musical that was adapted from the book.

This new version will be released in the UK on December 2, 2022 in cinemas. In every other region, it's going to go straight to Netflix that same month.

Matlida's cast is being led by the always-incredible Emma Thompson, who recently played a major role in Disney's Cruella. Here, she'll be taking another villainous turn as Miss Trunchbull, which is just perfect casting.

The rest of the cast is similarly strong, with No Time to Die and Captain Marvel's Lashana Lynch as Miss Honey. Line of Duty's Stephen Graham and The Death of Stalin's Andrea Riseborough will play Matilda's parents.

Meanwhile, we've got excellent stand-up comedian Sindhu Vee following on a role in Sex Education by playing librarian Mrs Phelps, and newcomer Alisha Weir as Matilda herself. Stand-up comedian, Tim Minchin, created the music and lyrics.

The musical premiered in 2011 on the West End, and has since won multiple Olivier and Tony awards.
