Erin Moran, best known for role as Joanie in ‘Happy Days’ dies, aged 56

Erin Moran, best known for her portrayal of Joanie Cunningham in hit sitcom Happy Days has died aged 56, it was reported in the United States.

According to the show business website, TMZ, the actress was found dead in Indiana after emergency services were called following reports of an “unresponsive female”.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

She rose to stardom playing the role of the younger sister to Richie Cunningham, portrayed by Ron Howard.

However her career started as a child, when she appeared in the television series, Daktari, playing alongside a chimp called Judy and a lion called Clarence.

She also appeared in Gunsmoke, My Three Sons and Watermelon Man

Later in her career, she appeared in The Love Boat, Murder She Wrote and Arrested Development.

In 2011 she joined fellow actors from Happy Days in filing a £6 million lawsuit against CBS and Paramount following a dispute over profits made from merchandising.

Moran said she had lost her home in California to a foreclosure in 2010 and she eventually moved to a trailer park in Indiana.

However, the judge ruled in favour of CBS, denying the actors punitive damages.
