The first trailer for The Crown star Claire Foy's new movie Women Talking has been released.

The anticipated film, which also stars Nightmare Alley's Rooney Mara and Nomadland's Frances McDormand, focuses on a group of women in a Mennonite community who discuss whether to leave their lives of horrific abuse at the hands of men behind.

For two years, the women and many other girls and women have been drugged and raped by the men, who tell them demons will punish them for their sins, and the women deliberate on whether to stay silent, fight back or flee as they get a shot at freedom.

The trailer gives a sense of the powerful drama, with Foy's character declaring at one point: "We know we have not imagined these attacks, we know that we are bruised and terrified."

"Hope of the unknown is good. It is better than hatred of the familiar," another character says.

Women Talking, which is based on Miriam Toews's 2018 novel and is directed and written by Sarah Polley, has already attracted huge acclaim since its recent premiere at the Telluride Film Festival, at one point gaining a 100% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Speaking previously about rehearsing the scenes and the ongoing conversations, Foy told Vanity Fair: "It happens naturally in any group, but I had never been in a group where all of those people in those roles – the leader, etc – was a woman.

"I found it dynamic and unpredictable and really, really deep at moments. I went to spaces I don't think I ever would've gone if the environment would have been different."

The movie also stars The Lost Daughter's Jessie Buckley, New Amsterdam's Judith Ivey and Paddington's Ben Whishaw.

Women Talking will be released in US cinemas on December 2 and UK cinemas on February 10, 2023.
