FKA Twigs says her relationship with Shia LaBeouf was a "living nightmare"
Actor and musician FKA Twigs (real name Tahliah Barnett) has been issued an official court date (17 April 2023) for her case against former partner, actor Shia LaBeouf, who she alleges was abusive during their relationship. Barnett is claiming that LaBeouf committed sexual battery, assault and intentional infliction of emotional distress, as well as alleging that he 'knowingly' infected her with an STD. She describes their relationship as a "living nightmare" and says in her filing paperwork that she has been left with PTSD as a result.
As part of her case, Barnett has also claimed that LaBeouf, who she met whilst filming the movie Honey Boy, once began driving manically, removed his seatbelt and threatened to crash the car they were both travelling in "unless Tahliah professed her eternal love for him".
Barnett also claims in her lawsuit that LaBeouf made efforts to choke her several times, once during a violent attack at a petrol station in February 2019. The legal papers write that LaBeouf "threw Tahliah against the car and attempted to strangle her violently while screaming in her face".
Last year, the New York Times published an email from LaBeouf in which he discussed his struggles with alcohol and in which he references being abusive to both himself and others around him.
"I have no excuses for my alcoholism or aggression, only rationalizations. I have been abusive to myself and everyone around me for years," the email is said to read. "I have a history of hurting the people closest to me. I’m ashamed of that history and am sorry to those I hurt. There is nothing else I can really say."
However, a month later LaBeouf went on to deny Barnett's allegations and said via his legal team that he was not responsible for causing his ex-partner any "injury or loss", adding that she is not "entitled to any relief or damages whatsoever" and that he denies "each and every" claim made against him.
Specifically commenting on the sexual battery claims, LaBeouf's response said: "none of the acts alleged were based on sex and/or the conduct was not sexual".
