Fleabag's Sian Clifford received a fitting gift from Phoebe Waller-Bridge after BAFTA win
Fleabag's Sian Clifford received a very special gift from Phoebe Waller-Bridge after winning a BAFTA last night (31 July).
The actress, who plays Fleabag's repressed sister Claire in the hit dark comedy, was awarded Best Female Performance in a Comedy Programme during the virtual ceremony hosted by Richard Ayoade. The category also featured Fleabag creator and Clifford's co-star Waller-Bridge, Frayed's Sarah Kendall, and Famalam's Gbemisola Ikumelo.
Speaking after her win, Clifford revealed that Waller-Bridge handed her the show's famous Godmother statue, aka the infamous bronze bust that featured on numerous occasions in the series after Fleabag steals it from her evil godmother, played by Oscar-winner Olivia Colman.
The 38-year-old star said that she and Waller-Bridge had planned to watch the virtual Virgin Media BAFTA Television Awards together, telling Digital Spy: "We had to be in different buildings because there was sound feedback, so we broke into our friend's house down the road.
"So I was there and she stayed at her's, but we reunited after I won. She ran over and gave me the Godmother statue, so that was pretty special. We both have one."
Fleabag was also nominated for Best Scripted Comedy, but lost out to BBC Two's Stath Lets Flats.
While accepting her award - via Zoom - Clifford was overcome with shock and emotion as she responded: "I honestly don't know what to say.... We're all winners here."
She continued: "I don't even believe in competition and all the women I’ve been recognised with, including the one I wouldn’t even be here without.
"This is unbelievable! Thank you to everyone involved – there is no Claire without Fleabag. This is so weird and surreal and I hope you're all celebrating today!"
Before the winner was announced, all four nominees poked fun at the Zoom conference set-up by pretending to pluck stray hair from their chins on camera.
Other winners of the night included Jared Harris for his role in Chernobyl, Glenda Jackson for Elizabeth is Missing, and Ava DuVernay's When They See Us for Best International series.
