It's been 25 years since The Full Monty made the nation fall in love with a group of Sheffield steelworkers who created their own Chippendales-style striptease act to make a living.

Disney+ has confirmed that the original cast of the 1997 comedy drama will be reprising their roles for an eight-part TV series.

Disney+ said the show would catch up to the characters as they "navigate healthcare, education and employment". The drama will "explore the brighter, sillier and more humane way forward where communal effort can still triumph over adversity".

The film starred Robert Carlyle, Tom Wilkinson, Mark Addy, and Hugo Speer, who will be returning for the series which will be created by the original screenwriter Simon Beaufoy.

Beaufoy said in a statement: "We're chuffed to bits to get all the Monty Men back together again – now with a chaotic entourage of children, grandchildren, pets and assorted hangers-on – to see what life in Sheffield is like 25 years on."

Here's everything else we know about The Full Monty series below...

The Full Monty TV series: Release date

Filming on The Full Monty TV series is underway this week, so we're hoping the series could be released later this year. The series will launch on Disney+.

The Full Monty: The cast

Robert Carlyle, Tom Wilkinson, Mark Addy, Hugo Speer, Paul Barber, Steve Huison, and Wim Snape will be reprising their roles for the series. They'll be joined by new cast members playing their children and grandchildren.

Lee Mason, director of scripted content for Disney, said: "Twenty-five years ago Simon introduced us to a group of funny, fearless and resilient unemployed working-class men from Sheffield and the world fell in love with them.

"We're delighted to reunite the original cast for this brand-new series on Disney+ to catch up with these iconic characters and what they've been up to since we last saw them on stage in all their glory, and we can't wait to introduce a host of exciting new faces and characters."

The drama begins shooting in Sheffield and Manchester this week.
