Gavin & Stacey star Alison Steadman has addressed the possibility of the hit BBC comedy returning for some more episodes.

The sitcom made a comeback after nine years for a Christmas special in 2019, leaving viewers on a major Smithy/Nessa cliffhanger that's left them longing for more.

Steadman, who plays Pamela Shipman, has now been asked about the show's future – but her response is not quite the news fans will have been hoping for.

Speaking to Radio Times, she said: "I wouldn't know. Honestly, it's the truth. I doubt it'll go again but that's what I said in the nine-year gap [to the Christmas special] and I was wrong."

Although it's not looking too hopeful from Steadman's point of view, at least we know that if the show did return, she would definitely be on board to play Pam again.

Back in 2020, she said: "I don't take any notice of rumours. But there's no way I wouldn't do it. I'd run to Cardiff to be involved."

James Corden also spoke out about the possibility of more Gavin & Stacey episodes in the future, insisting that the decision doesn't lie solely with him.

"I wish I could say it's up to me," said Corden, who plays Smithy and co-writes the series. "The best thing about Gavin & Stacey is that it's Ruth [Jones] and I and, if I'm being completely honest, her judgement is exceptional.

"Look, I am going to have a bit more free time as of... next year and that will open some time for us to just be together, I hope."

He added: "It's amazing, it's incredible how people care about those characters in the show. It's so great and I realise the ending of that special does very definitely tease something else."

Gavin and Stacey series 1 - 3 are available to watch on BBC iPlayer now.
