'The Gilded Age' Season 2 Casts Netflix's 'A Christmas Prince' And 'Supergirl' Stars

Forget Emily in Paris and You for a moment because The Gilded Age is the latest TV drama we've been obsessing over.
The HBO series, which first aired on Sky Atlantic on January 25, 2022, was written by none other than Downtown Abbey creator Julian Fellowes.
During season one, we saw the Russells scramble their way to the top of society's ladder, despite accusations of manslaughter and being looked down on by their peers. Meanwhile, George (Morgan Spector) and Bertha Russell (Carrie Coon) have cunningly elbowed their way into society, but just how long with their reign last?
Here's what we know about the new series so far:
Who has been cast in The Gilded Age season two?
According to Deadline, Ben Lamb (who plays King Richard in A Christmas Prince) and Laura Benanti (who plays Alura and Astra in Supergirl) have signed up for season two as newbies The Duke of Buckingham and Susan Blane.
Lamb's character is described as a 'posh British nobleman' who's just arrived in NYC while Benanti's is newly widowed, 'very beautiful' and 'glamorous'. She's also a Newport resident who hires Larry Russell as her architect for a house renovation.
Christopher Denham (Billions), David Furr (The Blacklist), Matilda Lawler (Station Eleven), Dakin Matthews (Desperate Housewives), (son of the great Andre) Michael Braugher, Nicole Brydon Bloom (Law & Order: Special Victims Unit) and Robert Sean Leonard (House) will also star in the forthcoming season.
It's hard to imagine The Gilded Age without the Russells, so we expect to see them make a valiant return, as well as Marian Brook (Louisa Jacobson).
Actor Christine Baranski, who plays Mrs Agnes van Rhijn too, has also said she'd love to make a return to the show, noting, per Town and Country,: 'We're all hoping that it goes on. I could definitely, happily continue with this show and with these actors, and with this particular marvellous writer, Julian.'
Variety reported in September 2019 that the A-list cast of The Gilded Age would include Nixon, as well as The Good Wife's Baranski and Dirty John's Amanda Peet.
Carrie Coon, who starred in the psychological thrilled The Nest and Taissa Farmiga from The Nun were also confirmed.
What's The Gilded Age season two plot?
The drama is set in 1882 during a period of immense economic change, huge fortunes and loss, according to HBO.
Brook is introduced to the story from the beginning as the struggling orphan daughter of a Union general, who relocates from Pennsylvania to New York to live with her wealthy aunts Agnes van Rhijn (Baranski) and Ada Brook (Nixon).
In the company of Peggy Scott (Denée Benton), a successful African-American woman, Brook becomes involved in a social war with one of her aunts and her rich neighbours, among whom are the straight-talking railroad tycoon, George Russell, and his go-getting wife Bertha.
When it comes to season two, director Salli Richardson-Whitfield said, per Town and Country that 'there are all sorts of ideas and dreams [for new storylines]'.
It's likely that the Russells' place in society will once again be threatened and Mr Russell will continue making his dream of an electrically powered train line a reality.
We also have a feeling Peggy will continue searching for her long lost child, and Marian Brook won't remain brokenhearted for long given her bond with Larry Russell.
When will The Gilded Age season be released?
HBO announced in February 2022 that season two of the show had been commissioned.
'Julian Fellowes and the entire Gilded Age family have thoroughly captivated us with their tale of late 19th-century New York City extravagance,' executive VP of programming at HBO, Francesca Orsi, said in a statement.
'Along with our partners at Universal Television, we couldn't be prouder to embark on a season two journey with this extraordinarily talented team.'
As for when season two will be released is anyone's guess. Season one premiered in January 2022 following a year of production, so it's likely season two would make an arrival no earlier than spring 2023.
Regardless of when season two hits out screens, its writers are busy planning.
'The truth is, we're always getting the second season ready long before we know whether it goes ahead or not,' executive producer Gareth Neame told the Radio Times. 'Because, you know, the moment we know we're going ahead, we have to start – the cameras have to start rolling. So you sort of have to prepare.
'So we're already under way with ideas for the second season.'

What has Julian Fellowes said about The Gilded Age?
Fellowes, who worked on a Downtown Abbey spin-off in 2012, said that he was 'up to my neck in research' for season one when speaking to The Los Angeles Times in 2016.
'These people were extraordinary. You can see why they frightened the old guard, because they saw no boundaries,' he said when talking about the characters in the upcoming series.
'They wanted to build a palace, they built a palace. They wanted to buy a yacht, they bought a yacht. And the old guard in New York weren’t like that at all, and suddenly this whirlwind of couture descended on their heads. They redesigned being rich.'
